Installation and first setup

From the box to a picture in the app, in five steps.

  1. 1

Get ready: the recorder, network cables, a hard drive, a PoE switch and IP cameras. Turn on ONVIF and DHCP on the cameras first, and audio if you need sound.

  2. 2

Connect the network: the internet (for example your router) goes to the recorder’s WAN port; cameras and other local devices go to the LAN port.

  3. 3

Fit the drive and power up: connect the drive to the cable inside the recorder, then plug power into the DC 12V socket on the back. A blinking green network light on the front means the recorder has reached the NUVAXS server.

  4. 4

Connect the cameras: run the recorder’s LAN port to the switch’s uplink port, then each PoE port to a camera. Weatherproof connectors outdoors.

  5. 5

Bind with the app: download the NUVAXS app and sign in (Apple, Google or LINE work). Tap “+ Scan QR code” on the home screen: scan the start-up screen if a monitor is connected, or the QR code on the case if not. Enter a device name and PIN; “Bound” means you are done.

NoteThe PIN unlocks the recorder’s own menus. The uplink port’s position differs between switches; use the one labelled Uplink.

02

Add cameras

Once the recorder is bound, add cameras to its channels in the app.

  1. 1

On the app’s home screen, tap the recorder.

  2. 2

Tap the edit icon at the top right to enter edit mode.

  3. 3

    Tap “⊕” on a channel.

  4. 4

Pick the camera from the “Add camera” list.

  5. 5

Enter the camera’s own user name and password, and it is added.

NoteIf a camera is missing from the list, check that it has ONVIF and DHCP turned on and sits on the recorder’s LAN side.

03

Share with family or colleagues

Let others watch with a share code; you set the role, how long it lasts and how many times it works.

  1. 1

On the home screen, tap the share icon at the top right (left of the bell) to open “NVR access”.

  2. 2

On the “Share codes” tab, tap “+ Create share code”.

  3. 3

Choose the role, how long it is valid and how many uses, then tap “Create”.

  4. 4

Tap “Share” to send the code.

  5. 5

The other person signs in to the NUVAXS app, taps “+ Scan QR code” on the home screen and scans it, or types the code and taps “Join”.

NoteA share code is like a key: give it only to people you trust, and keep its time and uses short. You can revoke codes you no longer need; people who already joined stay until you remove them on the “Members” tab.

04

Download recordings

Save the clips you need to your phone.

  1. 1

On the home screen, tap the recorder, then “Playback” at the bottom.

  2. 2

Tap the channel you want to open its playback.

  3. 3

Drag the timeline, or tap the date at the bottom left to pick a time, then tap the download button next to the date.

  4. 4

Set the start time and length, tap “OK”, and the clip is saved to your phone.

NoteTo download an event clip: on a channel’s “Events” tab, tap the download icon on the right of the event.

  3. 3

The AI tab sets the sensitivity per type: higher catches more, and also misfires more.

Frequently asked questions

What does the network light on the front mean?

The front lights are, from left to right, the hard drive (HDD), network (ONLINE / OFFLINE) and power (POWER) indicators. A blinking green network light means the recorder has reached the NUVAXS server, so you can watch remotely in the app and web app and receive notifications. If it does not light, check that the WAN port is connected to a router with internet access and that the network provides DHCP.

Where are the QR codes for binding?

There are four: on the setup screen shown at first start-up, on the sticker on the case, on the circuit board inside, and at the bottom of the recorder’s System settings → System page. The app can bind with any of them through “+ Scan QR code” on its home screen; without a monitor, scan the one on the case.

How can another phone or account use the recorder?

There are two ways. Scan the binding QR code on the case, the circuit board or the System settings → System page with the app; if “Let others join by scanning the binding code” was ticked when binding, others can join this way too. Or the owner creates a share code under “NVR access”, with its role, validity and number of uses.

Which cameras are compatible?

Any IP camera that supports ONVIF, whatever the brand. Before adding one, turn on ONVIF and DHCP on the camera, and audio if you want to record sound. Cameras the search does not find can be added by hand under camera management on the recorder, by entering their RTSP or ONVIF address.

The mouse pointer is missing on the recorder screen

The pointer hides after about 15 seconds without mouse movement; move the mouse to bring it back. If it still does not appear, unplug the USB mouse and plug it in again.

Right-clicking only shows a sign-in window

The recorder’s menus are locked. They lock automatically after a period of inactivity; unlock with the PIN, or scan the unlock QR code on the screen with the app. That code changes every 60 seconds.

Some items are missing from the quick menu

The menu follows the current user’s role, and features the role does not allow are hidden. Ask the owner to change the user’s role under accounts and roles.

The playback calendar shows no marks

The calendar outlines days with recordings in blue. Select the channels to play back first; if the calendar is still blank, there are no recordings that month.

The download button on the recorder cannot be pressed

Downloading on the recorder needs a selected camera and a USB drive plugged in; it backs up clips of 30 seconds to 60 minutes. Alternatively, create a QR code to download straight to a phone; the link is valid for 1 day.

Download QR codes or unlocking by QR do not respond

Both need the recorder to be online. Check that the network light on the front blinks green; if it does not, check the WAN cable and the router.

A camera shows as offline

Open the Account tab under camera management on the recorder and check the camera’s IP address, port, user name and password. Also check the camera’s power and network cable, for example its connection to the PoE switch.

The screen goes blank after switching to 4K output

A monitor that does not accept 4K input cannot show the picture. No action is needed: after 60 seconds the recorder restores the previous resolution and restarts.

Data on a newly fitted hard drive has disappeared

The recorder formats any drive that is not in its own format, which erases the data on it. Back up anything important before fitting the drive.

Drive usage shows 100%

Usually the drive is full and the recorder is overwriting the oldest footage, which is normal; no need to format. Run a health check to confirm the drive is fine. Formatting erases every recording and cannot be undone.

One tile is frozen in the web app

Click the frozen tile and press "P2P" in the bar below it; if it does not recover, press the refresh icon in the same bar. If every tile is frozen, check the computer's connection or reload the page with F5.

No picture in the web app in Edge

Whether Microsoft Edge can play H.265 depends on the computer's graphics card and system components. If the picture does not show, set the camera's video encoding to H.264.
